About FormatMill

FormatMill is a free set of file tools that run entirely in your browser. Convert an image, shrink a video, crop a photo, turn pictures into a PDF, merge documents: it all happens on your own device, and nothing is uploaded.

Why in the browser

Most online converters work by sending your file to a server, processing it there, and sending it back. That means your file, which might be a passport scan, a contract, or family photos, lands on a stranger's machine. FormatMill takes the opposite approach. Modern browsers are powerful enough to do the work themselves, so your files never leave your computer. It is more private, and there is nothing to wait in a queue for.

What that means for you

• Your files stay on your device from start to finish.
• It is free, and the common formats are covered.

The trade-off

Doing everything locally has limits. Very large videos can be slow or memory-hungry, because your browser is doing the encoding rather than a data centre. Where that matters, the tools tell you plainly instead of pretending otherwise.
